About Us
Journeys for Appalachian Youth, Inc.
A Kentucky-based nonprofit 501(c)3 corporation committed to impacting the youth of Appalachia by providing workshops and travel experiences to educate and change the lives of youth that are unable to provide for themselves. Our goal is to serve the entire Appalachian region helping youth realize the opportunities that are available to them beyond where they live.
Dan Callahan; CEO & Founder
Dan was inspired by his wife Beth to start Journeys for Appalachian Youth, Inc. It was her passion for travel and wanting her high school students to have the ability to discover other cultures within our country and the world. She successfully lead two trips overseas for high school students but quickly found that interest was high but the majority of the students from this area were unable to afford it. Dan put his desire to give back to his community and help youth realize their dreams to create Journeys for Appalachian Youth, Inc. He is the main fundraiser and the face of the organization. He looks forward to working within Southeastern Kentucky sharing the vision and goals of this organization and quickly making an impact in the lives of local youth.
Beth Callahan; Director
Beth is a Spanish and Business teacher at Williamsburg High School in Williamsburg, KY. Beth has a passion for traveling and wants to be able to share it with young people. She has been able to lead two student groups on trips to France and Spain. While planning these trips there were so many that wanted to go and have these experiences but the costs made them unaffordable for them. She frequently hears stories of students that have never been out of the state of Kentucky and it breaks her heart. These kids are missing out on experiencing other parts of our country and the world. Giving them the opportunity to experience other cultures helps them to understand people outside of Appalachia and encourages them to be an active part of their own community. Beth looks forward to leading, guiding and stretching the minds of the youth of this area and showing them the possibilities that exist.
